# Numeric banding

The Numeric Banding tool is displayed to assist in making numeric selections or bandings. The bandings can be used in other tools (for example, as a dimension of a [cube](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/analysis/cubes/numeric-variables/index.md>)) or to create a [virtual variable](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/wizards-and-virtual-variables/numeric-banding-wizard/index.md>). The banding of a numeric variable consists of defining a series of bands, each covering a range of possible values (for example 0 to 200, 200 to 400 ...).

The banding can be viewed as either a [Chart](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/analysis/selections/numeric-banding/chart-view/index.md>) or a [Table](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/analysis/selections/numeric-banding/table-view/index.md>). These show both the definition of the ranges (i.e. the start and end values, for example 0 to 200) and also the count of records falling within the ranges. The counts can be useful to help decide the necessary size and number of bands are can be generated by clicking the [Update](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/analysis/selections/numeric-banding/counts-not-always-visible/index.md>) button.

The banding can also be viewed and [edited](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/analysis/selections/numeric-banding/specify-own-bands/index.md>) in a text format.

A variable level [Summary](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/analysis/selections/numeric-banding/summary-view/index.md>) is also available, which shows statistics such as overall counts, mean value, minimum and maximum values, etc.

The [Basic Options](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/analysis/selections/numeric-banding/basic-options/index.md>) provide control over the size and number of bands generated, and also over the [selection](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/analysis/selections/numeric-banding/basic-options/#base-selection>) of records which are allocated to these bands. The [Advanced Options](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/analysis/selections/numeric-banding/advanced-options/index.md>) provide further control for setting the start and end points of the banding and for various automatic options.
