# Virtual variable wizards

The way that Virtual Variables are created in FastStats is using Wizards. These are found on the [Wizards Ribbon Bar](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/wizards-and-virtual-variables/index.md>).

## Creating or updating a variable

Each wizard will take the user through a series of steps and then finish by either creating or (in the case of the Assign Values wizard) updating a Virtual Variable. In the final stages, each "creation" wizard will have a page similar to the one shown below.

This allows the user to either enter a description to create a new variable or overwrite an existing variable. The user can also tick the Create URN Snapshot which will record the records identified and can be used later to [recreate the virtual variable](<https://help.apteco.com/en/faststats/wizards-and-virtual-variables/virtual-variables/virtual-variables-recreate-virtual-variables/index.md>).
