# Multi dimension charts

A multi dimension chart splits your data by two dimensions at once, so you can compare categories within categories. For example, a clustered column chart could show the number of supporters in each region, with a separate column for each age band.

For how dimensions and measures work, see [Dimensions](<https://help.apteco.com/en/orbit/dashboards/dimensions/index.md>) and [Measures](<https://help.apteco.com/en/orbit/dashboards/measures/index.md>).

## Add a multi dimension chart

Most multi dimension charts need two dimensions and one measure. Combo charts need two dimensions and two measures. The **Multi Dimension Charts** group also has the cube, which has its own page. See [Cube tiles](<https://help.apteco.com/en/orbit/dashboards/tiles/tile-types/adding-cubes-as-dashboard-tiles/index.md>).

To add a multi dimension chart:

1. [Add a tile](<https://help.apteco.com/en/orbit/dashboards/creating-a-dashboard/#add-your-first-tile>) and choose a chart from the **Multi Dimension Charts** group as the **Tile Type**.
2. Under **Dimensions**, add two dimensions.
3. Under **Measures**, add the measure, or two measures for a combo chart.
4. Select **Apply**, then **Save** the dashboard.

Until the chart has the dimensions and measures it needs, the tile editor shows a warning, such as `Chart requires 2 dimensions.`

To show which colour belongs to which category, turn on **Legend** under **Tile Settings**. The chart's colours come from the [dashboard's theme](<https://help.apteco.com/en/orbit/reference/admin/application-settings/dashboard-themes-editor/index.md>), and an admin can also give particular categories their own [category colours](<https://help.apteco.com/en/orbit/reference/admin/application-settings/category-colours/index.md>).

## Chart types

Each chart type compares the categories of two dimensions in a different way.

### Clustered column

A clustered column chart shows a group of columns for each category of the first dimension, with a column for each category of the second. The vertical axis shows the measure.

### Stacked column

A stacked column chart stacks the second dimension's categories into one column for each category of the first. The vertical axis shows the measure.

### 100% stacked column

A 100% stacked column chart is a stacked column chart where every column adds up to 100%, so you compare proportions rather than totals.

### Clustered bar

A clustered bar chart is a clustered column chart turned on its side. The horizontal axis shows the measure.

### Stacked bar

A stacked bar chart is a stacked column chart turned on its side. The horizontal axis shows the measure.

### 100% stacked bar

A 100% stacked bar chart is a stacked bar chart where every bar adds up to 100%.

### Clustered line

A clustered line chart draws a line for each category of the second dimension across the categories of the first, such as years. The vertical axis shows the measure.

### Clustered area

A clustered area chart is a clustered line chart with the area under each line filled in.

### Stacked area

A stacked area chart stacks the filled areas on top of each other, so the top edge shows the total.

### 100% stacked area

A 100% stacked area chart is a stacked area chart that always adds up to 100%.

### Clustered combo

A clustered combo chart shows two measures. The left axis shows the first measure as clustered columns, and the right axis shows the second measure as a line for each category of the second dimension.

### Stacked combo

A stacked combo chart shows the first measure as stacked columns, and the second measure as a line for each category of the second dimension, on the right axis.

### 100% stacked combo

A 100% stacked combo chart shows the first measure as 100% stacked columns, and the second measure as a line for each category of the second dimension, on the right axis.
