Data Grid: How do I use a Scatter Chart?
The Data Grid Scatter Chart will allow you to visually explore the relationship between two numeric columns displayed on the Data Grid you are using.
The following example uses a selection based upon everyone who falls within an Income range. The Data Grid includes Income, Total Spend on Bookings, Total Spend on Insurance.
The Chart tab on the Data Grid then displays this information as below:
Data Point Colours
When a categorical variable is used, all the points of the different categories have their assigned colour displayed at the same time.
When you click on a category in the legend, this highlights just the points for that particular category. Click again to return to all categories.
Chart Zooming
At the bottom and right of the chart there are bars which can be used to zoom into the data display more closely. Either end of the bar can be used to make adjustments to the overall view.
Chart Animation
To see an animation of the points being plotted on the chart:
- Click on the Animate button
The points are plotted by the order of the records in the Data Grid. In the above example this will be Income range from lowest to highest e.g. <£10k to £100k+
Trend Line
The line on the graph showing the general direction that a group of points (records) seem to be heading.
Logarithmic Axis
Allows you to change the scale on either axis to use the logarithm of the value instead of the actual value, in this case Log Base 10.
E.g. 10=10, 10x10=100, 10x10x10=1000
This is useful for display purposes if your data holds large values.
