Numeric Banding: Overview

The Numeric Banding tool  is displayed to assist in making numeric selections or bandings.  The bandings can be used in other tools (for example, as a dimension of a cube) or to create a virtual variable.  The banding of a numeric variable consists of defining a series of bands, each covering a range of possible values (for example 0 to 200, 200 to 400 ...).

The banding can be viewed as either a Chart or a Table.  These show both the definition of the ranges (i.e. the start and end values, for example 0 to 200) and also the count of records falling within the ranges.  The counts can be useful to help decide the necessary size and number of bands are can be generated by clicking the Update button.

The banding can also be viewed and edited in a text format.

A variable level Summary is also available, which shows statistics such as overall counts, mean value, minimum and maximum values, etc.

The Basic Options provide control over the size and number of bands generated, and also over the selection of records which are allocated to these bands.  The Advanced Options provide further control for setting the start and end points of the banding and for various automatic options.
